چکیده

In this paper, we will examine the importance of music complexity as a factor for melody recognition in multi-voiced popular music. The assumption is that the melody (or lead instrument) will contain the largest amount of information – that it will be the least redundant voice. Measures of melodic complexity calculated from pitch and timing information are proposed. We test the different complexity measures and different prediction strategies, and evaluate them on the task of predicting which track of a MIDI file contains the main melody. Filtering out melody tracks can be useful when searching large databases for similar songs. 108 melody track annotated pop songs were included in the experiment.

Melodic track identification in MIDI files

The objective of this work is to find the melodic line in MIDI files. Usually, the melodic line is stored in a single track, while the other tracks contain the accompaniment. The detection of the track that contains the melodic line can be very useful for a number of applications, such as melody matching when searching in MIDI databases. The system was developed using WEKA. First, a set of desc...

Melody Track Identification in Music Symbolic Files

Standard MIDI files contain data that can be considered as a symbolic representation of music (a digital score), and most of them are structured as a number of tracks, one of them usually containing the melodic line of the piece, while the other tracks contain the accompaniment. The objective of this work is to identify the track containing the melody using statistical properties of the notes a...

MIREX 2005: Symbolic Genre classification with an ensemble of parametric and lazy classifiers

The symbolic genre classification algorithm submited to the MIREX (Music Information Retrieval Exchange) 2005 is described here. Our algorithm uses a combination of k-nearest neighbors and Bayesian classifiers trained with different sets of statistical descriptors extracted from melody tracks extracted from MIDI files. It is aimed at classifying melodies by genre. The statistical descriptors de...

Melodic Track Identification in MIDI Files Considering the Imbalanced Context

In this paper, the problem of identifying the melodic track of a MIDI file in imbalanced scenarios is addressed. A polyphonic MIDI file is a digital score that consists of a set of tracks where usually only one of them contains the melody and the remaining tracks hold the accompaniment. This leads to a two-class imbalance problem that, unlike in previous work, is managed by over-sampling the me...
